定语的翻译：
1、 分词短语作定语
2、 不定式短语作定语
3、 介词短语作定语
4、 形容词短语作定语
首先组合在修饰词的前面，少数后置。
分词短语作定语的例子：
例1：1998年73题
73) A***ophysicists working with ground-based detectors at the South Pole and balloon-borne in***uments are closing in on such ***uctures, and may report their findings soon.
专有名词

超纲短语：通过上下文根据汉语习惯来猜测词义，

例2：2000年75题

复数的翻译：增加词。如“一些” 、“某些” 、“各种” 、“种种”

themselves 指代mass migration movements
英语中的破折号用法和中文一样，翻译时可以照样。

分词短语作定语翻译时应放在前面，有两种选择：1、放到any other capabilities and habits 的前面；2、放到belief的前面（

emphasis 主语中心词，用词性转化技巧翻译成动词，强调……；emphasis on 名词性短语
emphasis on data gathered first-hand 强调收集第一手资料
combined with a cross-cultural perspective brought to the analysis of cultures past and present 这个成分常常叫做独立成分，它的存在与否都不改变主语的人称和数的变化。这句译文：加上在分析过去和现在文化中采用的跨文化观点。
谓语是 make
combined with 结合，加上
cross-cultural 专有名词，跨文化
perspective：①透视画法；②观察到的现象或景象；③观点，看法，视角。
combined with a cross-cultural perspective 加上一种跨文化观点或视角
brought to the analysis of cultures past and present 分词短语修饰perspective，翻译时前置。其相当于一个定语从句：…perspective which is brought to …
brought to 被带到；采用（根据汉语习惯，及上下文翻译为“采用” ）
cultures past and present 过去和现在的文化
analysis of sth. 对……的分析；（词性转化）分析

distinctly 极其，非常
译文：强调收集第一手资料，加上在分析过去和现在文化中采用的跨文化视角，使得这一研究成为一门独特而又非常重要的社会科学。
distinct 区别 distinctly 极其，非常
考研翻译中有这种情况：形容词+ ly = 副词，就失去了形容词的基本意义，只表程度，“极其，非常，很”的意思。

例1：1994年74题

这两个不定式应该拆分开，因为to turn…on …作定语修饰person;
而to prove作目的状语。

《天地英雄》 The Hero of Earth and Heaven
译文：伽利略最伟大的成就在于在1609年他是第一个用新发明的望远镜来观察天空的人，以证明行星是围绕太阳旋转而不是围绕地球旋转的。
小结：
分词短语和不定式短语作定语时，一般翻译在中心词前，但少数情况下也可以直接翻译在中心词后面。
